. This is documentation for Application Server 10.2.0.2 as this is the latest currently

So lets Start with Installation of 10g Application server , you can see Installation guide from above location or from Installation Guide Click Here(This is for linux version)

Where to find Oracle 10g Application Server Software ?
Software for Installing 10g Oracle Application Server is available at http://edelivery.oracle.com/

What should ne Order of Installation ?
As OAS (Oracle Application Server consist of ) consist of OAS Middle Tier & OAS Infrastructure , you should first Install Infrastructure . Why ? because Middle Tier services need Infrastructure .

Can I install Infrastructure & Middle Tier under same ORACLE_HOME ?
No they can't be installed under same ORACLE_HOME they need separate ORACLE_HOME but they can be on single machine or separate machine(Your wish)

What in Installed under Infrastructure ORACLE_HOME ?
Under Infrastructure oracle_home you will have
database (which will hold data both configuration data & content data)
Oracle Internet Directory directory for user credential & other application information. (This inturn consist of DIP & replication oid will explain later )
Single Sign On (consisting on HTTP_Server, OC4J_Security)
Oracle Certifying Authority (Optional, will explain later don't install it at this minute)
High Availability (Optional, will explain later don't install it at this minute)

What in Installed under Middle ORACLE_HOME ?
depending upon type of MT Installation you selected you will see
WebCache (Cache to store information for better performance as well other uses like load balancing, reverse proxy ..)
    J2EE (for java application)
HTTP_Server ( Oracle-Apache Webserver for accessing application over internet)
    Portal
    Wireless

So go through installation Guide mentioned above & put your comments if you have any doubts .

I have an Application Database that supports n different Java Applications ec. Can I install the infrastructure in this db? why would I need a seperate db for the infrastructure....obviously I guess it would depend on if Oracle supports it or not - Thanks again for your consistent support to the community

During the installation, only host names are entered. However, users will be accessing on the internet with something like www.myportal.org. Where do I specify this URL during the isntallation. Does this URL have anything to do with the Login URL parameter in SSO configuration page?

    • At 10:36 AM, Blogger Atul Kumar said…

This is done by putting a external load balancer or an entry in dns server & then reregistering SSO with new server . Apart from ssoreg.sh on middle tier you have to run ptlconfig -dad <> for portal

Do the two different Oracle Homes two different oraInventories ?

    • At 12:06 PM, Blogger Atul Kumar said…

You can have two different ora inventory for two oracle home of 10g AS on one machine but ideal way is to have single global inventory per server with their own local inventory.

      Kim

What do u mean by oracle web server & oracle 10 g rel 2 app server here . Of this is Oracle Application Server and you don't need session persistence use webcache as load balancer or HTTP hardware load balancer

We already have Oracle Database server 10g (10.2.0.1) intsalled on HP- UX Itanium and its running fine. Recently we installed Oracle Application Server 10g(10.1.2) on the same host. We configured the Middle tiers and Infra structure including meta data repository on the same host. But few days back we are not able to start the repository database, the error is like

ORA-01092: ORACLE instance terminated. Disconnection forced

When we checked the alert log it says,

      ORA-00704: bootstrap process failure

ORA-39700: database must be opened with UPGRADE option

      Wed Sep 19 11:48:21 2007

Error 704 happened during db open, shutting down database

USER: terminating instance due to error 704

Instance terminated by USER, pid = 20522

ORA-1092 signalled during: alter database open...

The repository database is of version (10.1.4). but the same above installation is working fine on windows. could u please suggest me a solution for this problem

It seems you are using 10.2. ORACLE_HOME to start repository database which is of version 10.1.0.4

Check datase ORACLE_HOME and SID set properly poiniting to 10.1.0.4 oracle_home and not to 10.2 database oracle_home

I set the environment variables HOME and SID before starting the database. but still i am getting the error. Is there any other settings need to be configured before starting the database

      Hi Atul,

We have Oracle Database server 10g (10.2) and Oracle Application Server (10.1.2) installed on HP-UX under different user in the same host.

The problem we were facing is like when we are trying to start the Metadata Repository database (10.1), it was not coming up to the open mode,

ORA-01092: ORACLE instance terminated. Disconnection forced

As per the guidance from Atul, we set the entire environmental variables referencing to the Application server

The problem is with the Oracle Environmental Variables. It should point to the Oracle Application Server

      Regards

      Jishar

I am trying to find Oracle documentation recommending us to cluster J2EE OAS Servers together and have the Reports Server on a separate install. We have 5 apps that take up a lot of memory and use toplink heavily and are deployed on an OC4J instance in our production environment that has the reports server as well. In our testing environment we separated the two and have 2 app servers clustered with a separate reports server install and things run much faster. However, we have to show Oracle documentation recommending this setup for us to proceed. Does this documentation exist? Any help is appreciated....
